ABOUT MIKE
In 2009, I started Michael Cole Communications as a part-time venture out of my passion for writing, public speaking and the intersection of communications, business and public opinion. I'm fascinated how well-written speeches, advertisements, and presentations persuade people to take action. Over the past fifteen years, I have worked with advertising agencies, small businesses, non-profits, national associations, and statewide referendum campaigns.
In short, I believe in the power of the written and spoken
word. I also serve as a part-time assistant speech and debate coach at a local public high school. I have seen, firsthand, how the right words and narratives have the power to truly connect with our audiences and help shape our intended outcomes.

Debate Book (October 2025)
In 2018, I began working on a book about High School Debate. As a former debater, I remained interested in the activity and began judging local tournaments when my son began competing.
As a former National Champion in policy debate (a long time ago!), I've always credited debate with shaping the skills I have used throughout my professional life. The more I worked on the book, the more I realized I needed to keep researching. I interviewed more than two dozen coaches, former coaches and NSDA board members. .Then in 2021, a chance to professionally join the activity began as I became part-time assistant coach at Sioux Falls Jefferson High School.
Hustle and Flow is a brief history on American high school debate, as well as an instructional guide for how debaters can take their performance to the next level. It is also a prescription for how high school debate can overcome its current challenges and thrive in the years ahead. The book will be released in October 2025.
